Kenyan youth, Zech Obiero, has inked his first professional contract with English side Leyton Orient.
Obiero, the son of former Gor Mahia player Henry Obiero, on February 4, signed a two and a half year deal with the club, making him an Orient player until the summer of 2024.
Obiero, who joined the academy at the age of 16, celebrated his 18th birthday last week. His brother plays for Huddersfield Town, an English club in the championship division.
A technically blessed centre midfielder, Obiero caught the eye of the club in pre-season, scoring a thunderbolt from long range in an Orient XI game against Dulwich Hamlet.
Obiero went on to play with the first- platoon, and was named on the bench in the Carabao Cup game against QPR.
During the U18’s this season, he has been key in the midfield, and was a big part of his side's campaign leading to the FA Youth Third Round draw at Chelsea.
Speaking to the Leyton Media press, His Academy director, Brian Saah, was pleased to see him pen his first deal.
“Zech was one of the later ones to get a scholarship, but once he came in, people were speaking really highly of him; he wants to learn, and he’s got loads of ability.
“Joe and Kenny took a shine to him beforehand, as did the players and staff, so we ’re all pleased to get it over the line.
“He’s technical ability is on top and can score goals, basically an all round player. He has energy and can work box-to-box, and is starting to learn the defensive aspects of the game too,” Brian Saah stated.
