A stadium in Senegal is set to be named after Sadio Mane after winning AFCON 2021.

Mayor of the Senegalese region of Sedhiou, Abdoulaye Diop confirmed plans to name the city’s new stadium after Liverpool star Sadio Mané.

Diop stated that the naming of the stadium is a reward for his performances at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.

The 29-year-old scored the winning penalty-kick that helped Senegal beat Egypt 4-2 in the penalty shootout, sealing Senegal's first Afcon title.

The Liverpool forward featured in all of the Teranga Lions' games contributing three goals with two assists.

“I would like, through the decision to give the name of Sadio Mane to the Sedhiou stadium, to translate the recognition of all the worthy sons of the region.

“Sadio Mané has honoured all of Senegal, the Sedhiou region and the entire Casamance area. I have decided to name the Sedhiou stadium after him.

“In doing so I wish to convey the gratitude of all the sons and daughters of the region towards him,” the mayor stated.

The national government also award each player Ksh9.8 million ($87,000) for their good performance at AFCON, along with the prestigious Order of the Lion recognition and parcels of land.

The next task is for Senegal to qualify for the Qatar 2022 World Cup as they face Egypt in a two-legged qualifier in March.
