Retired International Cyclist Dies After Being Struck by Lightning

Renowned cyclist, Samuel Cabrera, was struck by lightning while working on his farm in Colombia on Monday, March 21. 

Cabrera was a retired cyclist who took part in the Tour de France on six occasions, having won the Tour of Guatemala in 1980, Costa Rica and Guatemala in 1982. 

The news on the demise of the 61 year old former cyclist was revealed by his brother Jose Cabrera.

"We have little information, but what we do know is that he was on his farm, working and that it was raining, when lightning struck and killed him. 

"We are waiting for more information to coordinate everything, but we understand that he was picking coffee," his brother noted. 

Cabrera during his career was signed by the Spanish team Reynolds in 1986 before retiring in 1989. 

Various cyclists took to their social media to express their shock and condolences to the veteran cyclist with many referring to him as a legend in the sport. 

“I regret the death of Samuel Cabrera, a great friend and an excellent human being. I send my condolences and a fraternal hug to his family. Rest in peace,” Fabio Parra commented. 

"A big hug to the family and friends of Samuel Cabrera, who tragically passed away yesterday, Monday. Thank you for your quality and sympathy, 'Samy'. See you forever. DEP,” another statement read.
