In the ongoing Africa Zone 3 Boxing Championship in DR Congo, Kenya has displayed dismal performances as10 out of 22 Kenyans have bowed out of medal contention.

The national boxing team head coach Benjamin Musa has, nonetheless, criticised the organisers of the tournament for poor officiating.

The Kenyan coach challenged the judge's decision citing a decision against Christine Ongare that was overturned.

Ongare had been awarded the victory against Gisele Nyembo of DR Congo. However, an appeal was brought forward awarding the victory to her light flyweight opponent.

"The team underwent medical check-ups at 4 p.m. and then the match started at 7 p.m. on the same day. That is only a few hours’ difference and that is not how it should be done.

“Weighing and medical checkups are always done early in the morning, also the draws are being done every day while it’s supposed to be done on the first day so that everyone knows the number of entries per category,” head coach Benjamin Musa noted.

He complained that the host has been adding players which have led to the draw being conducted on a daily basis.

“Our hosts keep adding players every day and that makes the bouts increase and lead to draws being done every day.

"Hopefully, when the report of this competition will be sent to Association Internationale de Boxe Amateur (AIBA), those in charge will be punished,” Musa added.

He also noted that such a type of officiating has dragged Africa behind as a continent in the boxing world.
