
Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i is set to champion the creation of a sporting facility in Ruiru which will include an indoor training arena for the Prisons volleyball team that has been the dominant side in the top flight volleyball games in Kenya.
Speaking during the flag handover by the Prisons volleyball team at Magereza House where the athletics relay team was also present, the Cabinet Secretary promised to lead a fundraising campaign that will be not only for the Sports facility but also to sign a partnership with private sector players would assist the Prisons Volleyball team in gaining kits and other facilities needed to run the team.
In their pursuit of sailing the Kenya Prisons organisation image the top through putting their efforts in sports the Matiang'i acknowledged their efforts and promised to reward them through rising in ranks some of the players who serve them diligently in the Prison Service.
``We have only one step left and we will move quite a number of you who work in the prison service in terms of ranks and this will be sought out before the first of July and we will have a meeting with the head of public service so that we get all the agencies together and deal with that aspect of stagnation.'' said Cs Fred Matiang'i
Dr Matiangi's sentiments were echoed by Kenya Prisons Service Sports Coordinator and iconic marathon runner Cathrine Ndereba who emphasized that the Sports complex in Ruiru will aid the Prison Service athletes in performance and further motivate players.
The Kenya Prisons team bagged a bronze medal in the 2021 edition of the African Club Championship that was held in Kelibia, Tunisia last week. The team fell short in the semi-final stage to Tunisia's Carthage who were crowned champions of the entire tournament.
The Prison's Volleyball solid performance at the continental showdown impressed the Prison Service Organisation and the government as well and thus triggering the move to construct a sporting facility that would help in preparation of matches by the athletes.
