The World Athletics raised the prize money for athletes at its flagship world championships, starting with the Oregon22 Championships.

The Championships will be taking place from Friday, July 15 to July 24 with Kenya fielding all five reigning world champions. 

Athletes who set a world record during the three-day event will be eligible for a special award of KSh118,200,000 (U$100,000).

The five Kenyan athletes that set world records in Doha in 2019 include Beatrice Chepkoech, Ruth Chepngetich, Timothy Cheruiyot, Conseslus Kipruto and Hellen Obiri. 

The prize money in Oregon is different for individual events and the relay (team). TeamKenya.co.ke breaks down the different prize money that athletes expect to receive. 

Individual events 

Gold: Ksh8 million ($70,000) 

Silver: Ksh4 million ($35,000) 

Bronze: Ksh2.6 million ($22,000) 

Fourth place: Ksh1.9 million ($16,000) 

Fifth place: Ksh1.3 million ($11,000) 

Relays (per team)  

Gold: Ksh9 million ($80,000) 

Silver: Ksh4.7 million ($40,000) 

Bronze: Ksh2 million ($20,000) 

Fourth place: Ksh1.9 million ($16,000) 

Fifth place: Ksh1.4 million ($12,000)
