Billy Odhiambo Makes Rugby 7s History in Los Angeles

Billy Odhiambo became the fourth Kenyan to reach 100 tries in Kenya’s history as Shujaa narrowly overcame favorites England 19-14 at the ongoing Los Angeles Sevens staged at Dignity Park, in California, United States.

The 28-year-old scored the second try for Shujaa after a brilliant display from Daniel Taabu. Taabu reacted quickly from a penalty tap to set up Odhiambo who sped off to score Kenya’s second try of the match.

The try saw Odhiambo set a new record in the World Rugby Sevens and join other three Kenyan greats.

He became the fourth Kenyan after the siblings Collins Injera and Humphrey Kayange as well as Willy Ambaka to reach the milestone.

Among the four, Injera leads the charts with 279 tries while Kayange and Ambaka boast of 159 and 131 tries respectively.

The World Rugby Sevens congratulated the Nyeri-born center half for the landmark achievement.

“Welcome to the 100 try club, Billy Odhiambo!” read their Twitter statement.

A few hours after entering into the history books, Odhiambo continued with his impressive performances to help Kenya proceed to the quarter finals.

He ran half-way through the field to score a try in the dying minutes of the match to help Shujaa thrash Scotland 20-10.

Kenya is set to play giants Australia in the quarter final that is slated for Sunday. The match will begin at  2013 hrs East African Time.

Should Shujaa pass the Australian test, they will play the winner between  Fiji and the United States in the semi-final.
