African nations have posted mixed results at the FIFA World Cup since the inception of the competition.

Some teams like Ghana, Senegal and Cameroon overcame all the odds to reach the quarterfinals stage of the global competition while others have failed to make it past the group stage.

Surprisingly, it took more than five decades before an African team scored against Brazil - one of the most successful nations in the history of the tournament.

Ivory Coast was the first team to penetrate Brazil’s defence and net a goal against them. The West African side did so in the 2010 memorable edition staged in South Africa.

Gervais Yao Kouassi popularly known as Gervinho produced a spectacular run from the edge of Ivory Coast’s six-yard box before finding Yaya Toure.

Toure then lobbed in a pinpoint cross which found Drogba unmarked in the Brazilian penalty box.

The powerful forward who was returning from an injury directed the ball into the bottom right corner of the net to hand his nation a consolation goal.

By finding the back of the net, Drogba became the first African player to score against Brazil in a World Cup competition.

Despite the complaints from the Brazilian defenders about the former Chelsea point man being offside, the goal stood and the match ended 3 - 1 in favour of the South American nation.

Brazil has been pooled against Cameroon in Group G ahead of the 2022 edition scheduled to take place between November 20 and December 18, 2022, in Qatar. Other teams in that group include Switzerland and Serbia.

Should Cameroon beat Brazil in their group encounter, they will become the first African country to defeat the five-time winners.
