Eliud Kipchoge is expected to award medals to young athletes on Saturday, October 1, at the London Marathon.

Kipchoge will be in London as a Mini Marathon ambassador six days after breaking the world marathon record in Berlin.

The young athletes will receive Ksh1,291 (£10) each for school equipment and a medal after participating in the mini-marathon that precedes the main event.

This year's London Marathon will see around 7000 young runners take part in the event, a similar number to that of people who registered to run the first-ever London Marathon in 1981.

According to London Marathon race director, Hugh Brasher, the Mini London Marathon can accommodate 50,000 runners in eight years’ time when the marathon event celebrates its 50th anniversary.

According to Brasher, Mini London Marathon is the only running event in the world where every child is paid to participate.

The money received by the young athletes is paid to their school to spend on sports or computer equipment.

Train strikes on Saturday are threatening to spoil the fun but Brasher assured of calm, stating that most regional teams will travel to the venue by coach, whereas athletes representing London Boroughs were already in the capital and will access the starting point by the Tube or DLR.

“We have an incredible heritage in this event... We now believe it is singularly the most important thing since my father and John Disley started the event in 1981,” Brasher noted.
