The 2022/2023 Kenya Premier League which is expected to commence in November has been marred with confusion following a recent ruling made by the Sports Dispute Tribunal (SDT).
According to the ruling, the promotion/relegation playoffs are expected to be staged again, months after it was played.
This came after the tribunal found Fortune Sacco guilty of failing to honor their NSL match against Shabana FC last season and ruled that Zoo’s participation in the National Super League (NSL) was illegal.

“The decision of the FKF independent disciplinary and appeals committee of 19th July 2022 is set aside and the decision of the transition committee 1st July 2022 is upheld.
“A declaration is hereby issued that the participation of Zoo FC in the FKF NSL 2021/2022 was in contravention of the FIFA decision on 23rd April 2021 thus null and void,” read part of the ruling from the STD.
The transition committee had handed Shabana three points after the match which was scheduled to take place on June 1 was abandoned.
When Fortune Sacco appealed the decision, the FKF disciplinary committee ruled in their favor and were awarded three points and finishing second.
Fortune Sacco thus received a direct promotion to the top flight league, with Murang’a Seals who registered a third-place finish playing Wazito in the playoffs. Wazito won the match and escaped being relegated.
Since Fortune Sacco had already played Zoo FC and registered a win, they will be deducted six points after the SDT ruling, making them to finish fourth behind Murang’a Seals and Muhoroni Youth.
Moreover, after STD’s ruling, Wazito who had already been confirmed for the 2022/2023 KPL season will have to battle it out with Muhoroni Youth in the playoffs.
Muranga Seal’s, who lost their playoff match on the other hand will receive a direct promotion to the Premier League, since after the ruling they would be placed second and therefore gain an automatic promotion.
