Portugal coach Fernando Santos quit his role as the national men's team manager on Thursday, December 15, following their loss to Morocco in the World Cup quarter-finals.

In a statement released by the Portuguese football federation (FPF) it was noted that an agreement was reached with Santos to end his tenure as the national team boss.

The federation also shared a video of the former manager bidding farewell to the team and staff.

In a video, Santos noted he was leaving his role with a feeling of enormous gratitude.

“When you lead a group, you have to make some difficult decisions. It’s normal that not everyone is happy with the choices I made,” Santos stated.

The FPF also noted that it had begun the process of choosing Portugal's next national coach.

Various reports suggested that AS Roma manager Jose Mourinho was the leading candidate in the race to succeed the 68-year-old.

Santos began his tenure as Portugal's manager in September 2014.

During his eight years as Portugal's national team head coach, Santos led the team to the Euros in 2016 and the UEFA Nations League in 2019.

Santos left his job as the only manager in the history of Portugal to win an international tournament.

He oversaw 109 international games, where the team scored 226 goals and won 67 times.
