Safari Rally Kenya is known to be notorious and one of the toughest rounds of the World Rally Championship.

According to a tweet by the WRC Safari Rally on Thursday, January 19, it was revealed that the rally came by after Marchese Enzo Cecil Tanfani was having a drink.

It was highlighted that Cecil also known as Mr. Safari proposed for a rally to celebrate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth.

Held first in 1953 as the East African Coronation Safari, the rally event took place in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanganyika.

Seven years later in 1960, it was renamed the East African Safari Rally with foreign drivers participating.

For 20 years the crown was won by local drivers until the late Hannu Mikkola who won in 1972 using a Ford Escort RS 1600.

During the event's 22nd anniversary in 1974, the name changed to Kenya Safari Rally.

The event adopted a special stage format in 1996 and from then until 2002, it featured over 1000km of timed tests.

However, after its 50-year anniversary in 2002, the event went missing on the World Circuit.

It later made a comeback, in 2021 as an event at the WRC Safari Rally, and will be celebrating its 70 years of existence in June 2023.
