Rybakina, a Kazakhstani international also overcame Swiatek in straight sets of 6-4, 6-4.

A dejected Gauff could not hold her tears during the post-match press conference.

Although she acknowledged that Ostapenko played better tennis, Gauff stated that there was a chance for her to up her game during the clash.

“It was a tough match for me. I think Jelena played really good tennis. She played really aggressively and I think everything was working well for her.

“I tried my best to come back. There are a couple of things I could have improved on, but I think she deserves to win today,” stated Gauff.

Prior to the match, Gauff had not dropped a single set, knocking out star players including British ace Emma Raducanu.

In the quarter-final, Rybakina will meet the winner between Karolina Pliskova and Shuai Zhang while Ostapenko is expected to play either Polish international Magda Linette or Caroline Garcia.
