Africa 7s: Shujaa Begin Title Defence With Win Over Senegal

Kenya's men’s national rugby 7s team, Shujaa, beat Senegal 19 - 0 in their opening match in the Rugby World Cup Sevens 2022 taking place in Uganda.

Shujaa are Africa 7s titleholders and will be seeking to defend it at the 2022 edition of the tournament in Uganda. 

Shujaa led Senegal 7-0 before the break after Herman Humwa registered the opening try of the tournament.

Bush Mwale sealed Kenya's dominance two tries in the second half. 

Shujaa is headed by coach Innocent Simiyu and has a squad comprising of experienced players and some newbies. Only eight players from the recently concluded World Rugby Sevens Series legs in Singapore and Vancouver respectively are in the squad. 

In other matches, hosts Uganda handed Burundi a 71-0 defeat as Zimbabwe suffered a 12-14 loss to Burkina Faso while Madagascar won 44-0 against Bostwana. 

The 2022 Rugby Africa Men’s 7s tournament is a two-day event taking place at the Kyadondo Rugby Grounds in Kampala, Uganda. 

The African tournament will act as qualifiers for both the Rugby World Cup Sevens 2022 in South Africa and the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England. 

It is expected that all the three medalists will qualify for the Rugby World Sevens in South Africa while the finalists will book themselves a slot for the Commonwealth Games. 

The teams taking part in the 2022 Africa Sevens include Uganda, Kenya, Burundi, Senegal, Zimbabwe, Burkina Faso, Madagascar, Botswana, Namibia, Ghana, Zambia, Cameroon, Tunisia and Mauritius.
