CF Montreal sporting director, Olivier Renard, confirmed that Victor Wanyama rejected multiple lucrative contracts offered to him and will thus leave the club in 2023.

Renard noted that it has been to the club's knowledge for months that the former Harambee Stars skipper would leave.

Renard also responded to critics questioning his decision to invest much money in a defensive player.

“I have often been asked why I invested so much money in a defensive midfielder, and now that it is almost certain that Victor will leave the club, one wonders why he is leaving,’ Renard stated.

The Belgian Sporting Director added that despite the possibility of many departures from the club, he will always find effective replacements.

“There are no essential players at our club. There are only important players, and Victor Wanyama is one of them.

"We proved this season that as soon as there were absentees, we could easily solve the problem,” Renard added.

Wanyama had earlier announced his exit from the Canadian side, a decision which shocked many.

The 31-year-old defensive midfielder, however, is yet to announce his next move once his contract expires in December 2021.

Wanyama, who joined Montreal in March 2020 from Tottenham, has lifted the Canadian Cup with the club.

The club captain has made a total of 89 appearances for the club.
