Little-Known Lucy Karimi Wins Venice Marathon in Italy

Kenya's Lucy Karimi ran a tactical race to  clinch the 2022 Venice Marathon title on Sunday evening, October 23.

Karimi outpaced her compatriots Rebecca Kangogo and Caroline Chebet to win the race in a time of 2:28.12.

The top three positions went to Kenyan women since Kangogo and Chebet settled for second and third-place finishes respectively.

The former crossed the finishing line in 2:29.14 while Chebet clocked a similar time after being edged at the line.

Burundi's Elvanie Nimbona and Fantu Jibar from Ethiopia reached the finishing line in 2:30.25 and 2:31.02 to finish fourth and fifth.

Uganda’s Solomon Mutai triumphed in the men’s race ahead of Kenya’s Emmanuel Naibei and Ethiopia’s Tafese Delelegn. 

In another event, Kenya's Beatrice Jelagat produced a dominant display to win Spain's Bilbao Night Marathon.

Jelagat reached the tape in 2:35.05, in the process smashing the course record.

Selina Jebet, also from Kenya finished second in 2:26.50 to register a second-place finish while home girl Dolores Marco timed 2:52.44 to finish third.

In the men’s category, Silas Kiprotich Kurui won the race ahead of his Kenyan colleague Silah Limoh. Kurui reached the tape in 2:14.51, nearly two minutes ahead of Limoh.

Elsewhere, Kenyan runners Levy Kibet and Lucy Mawia won the 2022 Cross Country titles in Bydgoszcz, North Poland in spectacular fashion.

Kibet, a World Athletics Under 20 bronze medalist overcame a strong opposition from Ethiopia’s Birhanu Abebe and Uganda’s Joel Ayeko to bag the title 

The 19-year-old athlete reached the tape in 23:18 ahead of Balew and Ayeko who clocked 23:25 and 23:34 respectively in a closely contested race.

In the women’s category, Kenyan athlete was also victorious. Lucy Mawia comfortably won the race in 20:11 to win the race ahead of Ethiopia’s Tsiyon Abebe. 

Abebe clocked 20:21 to beat Kenya’s Maureen Cherotich to the second-place position.
