Each year Northern Nomadic Disabled Persons Organization (NONDO) sets up The Desert Wheel Race, which was started in Isiolo County in 2012.

NONDO advocates for the rights, inclusion and participation of all disabled persons among nomadic communities in Kenya.

The Desert Wheel Race is the biggest sporting event in the country for the disabled.

NONDO's 2022 event will take place from November 3 to 5 in Isiolo County.

This is the 11th edition of the Desert Wheel Race, with this year's theme focusing on advocating for the meaningful engagement of pastoralists with disabilities in the public decision-making process.

The race features one-and-half kilometres of wheelchair race and five kilometres of tricycle competition and aims at bringing equality, integration and social inclusion of Persons With Disabilities as well as changing the narrative around matters of disability.

“Desert Wheel Race 2022 will be having forums on; impacts of corruption on Persons with Disabilities in Nomadic/Pastoralists counties & mitigation strategies to address the vice; and the Roles of Persons with disabilities in combating corruption in public service,” the organisers of the event noted.

The race is also significant to tourism in Kenya as different sports personalities from various parts of the world visit.

NONDO also seeks to break down cultural barriers and increase community cohesion among pastoral and Nomadic counties.
