Eliud Kipchoge Named as 2022 Abbott World Marathon Majors Series IX Champion

World Marathon record holder, Eliud Kipchoge, was named the 2022 Abbott World Marathon Majors Series IX champion. 

The 39-year-old two-time Olympic champion won the award for the fifth time running. Kipchoge, together with his compatriot Evans Chebet tied with 50 points. 

Kipchoge emerged victorious thanks to having the best head-to-head record in Qualifying Races during the Series.

The veteran broke his own record with 30 seconds at his fifth Berlin marathon on September 25, clocking a time of 2:01:09. 

In the women's field, Ethiopia's GotyTom Gebreslase won the title with 35 points defeating Kenya's Ruth Chepngetich, who had 25. 

The Abbott World Marathon Majors include six top marathons: Boston Marathon, Berlin Marathon, Tokyo Marathon, Chicago Marathon and New York City Marathon. 

Athletes who are eligible to earn points are those who feature in the top five in qualifying races during the 12 months. 

The number one athlete earns 25 points, runners-up 16, and third-place nine, with fourth and fifth place getting four and one points, respectively. 

Kipchoge won his first-ever Tokyo Marathon title in March 2022, with a time of 2:02:40. 

In 2022 Kenyan men marathoners won all six World Marathon Majors (WMM) titles.
