Harambee Stars defender Anthony Akumu has finally found a club after a tough six months.

Akumu, who was considered surplus by South African club Kaizer Chiefs, penned a deal with Japanese-based side Sagan Tosu.

The J1 League side announced the acquisition of Akumu on Thursday, December 22, 2022.

"We are pleased to inform you that Anthony Akum has decided to join Sagan Tosu,” read a brief statement from the club.

The 30-year-old joined Sagan Tosu on a free transfer after staying without consistent game-time.

On the other hand, Akumu promised to work hard and help his new club achieve its targeted goals.

"I am honored to be a member of one of Japan’s leading J1 clubs. I will do my best to have a good season with this club. We look forward to meeting the Sagan Tosu family. Thank you,” stated Akumu.

The Kenya international joined Chiefs in 2020 where he made a total of 47 appearances for the Glamour Boys before his departure to Japan.

Kaizer Chiefs wanted to sell Akumu in June this year before a mutual agreement was reached between the two parties to terminate the contract.

“The club has put Kenyan defensive midfielder Anthony Akumu Agay on transfer. The club will listen to offers from the clubs for his services.

“Like Kambole, Agay also arrived at Chiefs from Zesco and netted twice in his 47 appearances,” a statement from the club read then.

However, the wait continues for some of Akumu’s former teammates who were also released by Kaizer Chiefs including Daniel Akpeyi and Leonardo Castro.

Zambian side Zesco United was interested in Akumu’s services but he declined the offer.

Some of the other clubs that the Rachuonyo-born star has played for include Sudanese side Al Khartoum and the Kenyan  Premier League record champions Gor Mahia.

At the international level, Akumu made his debut for Harambee Stars in 2011. He was part of the Harambee Stars provisional squad for the 2019 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) but was later dropped.
