Kenya’s Weldon Langat Takes Valencia by Storm

Weldon Kipkirui Langat produced an electric performance to win the 10K Valencia Ibercaja title on Sunday, January 15, 2023.

Langat stepped on the gas in the final stages of the hotly contested race to reach the tape in an impressive time of 00:26.55.

He led his fellow countrymen Charles Langat and Daniel Tumaka Kosen to a clean podium sweep.

The former clocked 00:26.57 to finish second ahead of Kosen who crossed the finishing line four seconds later.

Kenya's Rhonex Kipruto is the current world record holder of the men's 10K road race.

Kipruto set the mark at the 2020 edition when he crossed the finishing line in a time of 00:26.24. 

In the women’s category, reigning London marathon champion Yalemzerf Yehualaw of Ethiopia was unmatchable.

Yehualaw, the 2022 world half marathon championships bronze medalist destroyed the field to win the race in a course record time of 00:29.19, missing her world record by a whisker.

She set the world record of 00:29.14 in February 2022 at the Castellón 10K road race.

The Kenyan duo of Jesca Chelangat and Esther Birundu Borura registered second and third-place positions - they clocked a time of 00:30.01 and 00:30.15 respectively.
