
Rift Valley and Western region Counties dominated the 2023 Kenya Inter-County Sports and Cultural Association (KICOSCA) Games, which closed on Saturday, January 21 in Kisumu.
Western region Counties were unmatchable in the football discipline with Kakamega County bagging the title thanks to a 3-1 win over rivals Busia County.
Kennedy Wandiri bagged a brace for Kakamega with Alloys Mangi adding another one. Moses Onyango scored Busia County's consolation goal.

Kisumu County Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o and his counterparts Johnson Sakaja ( Nairobi County) and Fernandez Baraza (Kakamega County) were in attendance at the Jomo Kenyatta Stadium in Mamboleo to watch the football final.
On the other hand, Rift Valley Counties dominated the track events with neighbours Usian Gishu and Nandi Counties registering excellent results.
Uasin Gishu County athletes won the 5,000m titles in both the men’s and women’s categories. Edna Too was victorious in the women’s category while Daniel Kipchirchir clinched the men’s title.
Nandi County’s Jacinta Jepkoech won both the 800m and 1,500m titles while Gilbert Kipkosgei clocked 32:51:00 to win the men’s 10,000m.
However, Nairobi County amassed 31 points to retain the national title ahead of hosts Kisumu and Bungoma Counties.
Kisumu garnered 18 points to finish second ahead of Bungoma County, who picked up the third-place trophy after garnering 14 points.
Reacting after the brilliant performance, Sakaja took to social media to praise his charges.
“Congratulations team Nairobi for emerging overall best team at the Kenya Inter-County Sports and Cultural Association (KICOSCA) Games held in Kisumu County.
“I’m extremely proud of you all! Every day. Thank you his excellency Anyang’ Nyong’o for being such a gracious host,” he stated.
The athletes took part in a number of sporting disciplines including netball, football, basketball, athletics, table tennis, handball, golf snooker, and draught.
