Kenyan Midfielder Linton Maina Shines as Bundesliga Returns

Linton Maina produced a monstrous performance on Saturday, January 21, 2023, to help FC Köln thrash Werder Bremen 7-1 in a Bundesliga match.

The 23-year-old scored a goal and provided two assists in the one-sided encounter played at the Rhein Energie Stadion in Germany.

Maina opened the scoring in the ninth minute for FC Köln before Steffen Tigges scored two quick-fire goals in the 15th and 21st minutes to put the hosts in control.

Other stars who were on the scoresheet for FC Koln include Denis Huseinbašić, and Ellyes Skhiri. Skhiri founded the back of the net two times and was named the man of the match. 

Maina whipped in a pinpoint cross in the 54th minute which was volleyed into the back of the net by Ellyes Skhiri to make it 6-1 in favour of the hosts.

The skillful attacking midfielder also had a hand in  FC Koln’s seventh goal when his dangerous cross was put into the back of the net by Werder Bremen's defender Marco Friedl

Maina was born in Germany to a Kenyan father and a German mother.

Although he has played for Germany in the youth categories, Maina is still eligible to wear the Harambee Stars jersey since he is yet to make an appearance for the European nation’s senior team.

The talented player played his first professional match in Hannover 96's narrow 1-0 defeat in the hands of Borussia Dortmund on Saturday, March 18, 2018.

He made a cameo as a substitute in place of Marvin Bakalorz.

At Hannover, Maina scored 11 goals in 91 appearances before joining FC Köln on a free transfer ahead of the 2022/2023 season.
