The Kenya national men’s sevens team, Shujaa, was pooled in a tricky group ahead of the  HSBC Sydney 7s scheduled to take place between Friday, January 27, and Sunday, January 29, 2023, in Australia.

Shujaa was grouped in Pool B alongside continental rivals South Africa and heavyweights New Zealand.

Shujaa would be seeking to better their results in Sydney after finishing 10th at the Hamilton 7s held over the weekend.

The team amassed a total of seven points, the highest ever registered this season.

They had already accumulated three and five points during the Cape Town 7s and Dubai 7s respectively.

In Hamilton, the Damian McGrath-coached side managed to pick up two wins, beating Canada, and Tonga in the ninth-place fixtures.

Some of the stars who were on the scoresheet for Shujaa in Hamilton include Willy Ambaka and Edmund Anya.

Reliable flanker Alvin “Buffa” Otieno also made a return to the squad after missing the opening legs of the season.

Kenya is ranked 13th in the 2023 log standings season with 16 points, 47 less than leaders New Zealand.

One team will be relegated and promoted at the end of the season. So far, only 15 points separate Shujaa and the last team on the log.
