CECAFA Challenge Cup Draw Set for Tuesday

The Kenya Under 23 team, Emerging Stars, will on Tuesday afternoon know their opponents  for the CECAFA Challenge Cup.

The tournament which is Africa’s oldest regional competition will be held in the town of Bahir Dar, Ethiopia starting on July 17.

This year’s edition is a special one as countries will field experimental sides, mainly the U-23’s as part of preparations for future assignments. 

The Emerging Stars under the tutelage of Stanley Okumbi have been in residential camp for three weeks now in preparation for the tournament. 

“We will go ahead and have the draw on July 13th at 13000hrs local time,” said Auka Gecheo, the CECAFA Executive Director. CECAFA will decide on the date the tournament will climax depending on the number of teams finally drawn today(Tuesday).

The tournament was originally  meant to kick off on July 3, but the CECAFA members requested that kick-off be moved to July 17. All member Associations expected to send teams to the tournament must pay US$20,000.

The teams expected to be drawn include; Uganda, Eritrea, Burundi, Ethiopia, Djibouti, South Sudan, Kenya, Tanzania and guest side DR Congo. The teams from Somalia, Sudan and Rwanda will not take part, while the Zanzibar Football Federation (ZFF) had not communicated their final position by July 12.
