
Joshua Cheptegei finally fulfilled his dream of winning an Olympics gold medal when he won the men's 5000m final at the Olympics stadium in Tokyo in a time of 12:58.15.
Kenya's medal hopeful Nicholas Kimeli posted a season best of 12:59.17 but he could not beat Paul Chelimo who made a last ditch effort to claim bronze.
After taking silver in the 10000m, Cheptegei went one better in the 5000m which he holds a world record with a well timed attack.
The Ugandan well-timed his kick with 600m to go, whizzing past Canadian Moh Ahmed who settled for silver in 12:58.15 and USA's Paul Chelimo (12:59.05)who literally had to nose dive to take bronze ahead of Kimeli.
After Daniel Simiu Ebenyo and Samwel Masai failed to to sail past the semis, all Kenyans hoped for a medal from their lone survivor Kimeli but his efforts were thwarted on the tape.
