Cristiano Ronaldo has broken the record for most goals scored in international soccer matches as his brace helped Portugal beat Ireland 2-1 in a World Cup qualifying match played at the Algarve Stadium in Portugal.
The 36-year-old had an early penalty saved by teenage goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu in Faro before Ireland took the lead on the stroke of half-time.
Ronaldo, however, equalised the scores at the 89th minute, with a thumping header, surpassing Iran’s Ali Daei(109) whom they previously shared a record with.
With only six minutes into the stoppage time, Ronaldo, who recently joined United, scored a header shattering the dreams of his opponents.
In an interview with a local TV station, Ronaldo stated that his motivation comes from the desire to play football.
“This record is mine, and it is unique. I'm extremely happy, and it's another one for my career," Ronaldo told RTP public television.
“The motivation comes from the desire I have to continue playing football, also from this last contract I signed at Manchester United, in which I was happy to return home," said Ronaldo.
"Scoring goals, putting on a show and winning titles, that's what I like the most." concluded the five-time Ballon d'Or winner.
Portugal sit top of Group "A" with 10 points from four matches, although Serbia are only three points behind with a game in hand.
The group of winners qualifies automatically for the next year's finals in Qatar, with the runners-up heading into the play-offs.
