The Diamond league season of elite athletics is set to take place in Gateshead on the 23rd of May after the city in north east England replaced Morocco's capital Rabat.
The meeting that was meant to take place at the Moroccan capital had been edged out due to the corona virus restrictions and the fear of rising cases of the virus within the country as the global sporting calendar continues to be disrupted.
This will be the first time that the English city has hosted a Diamond League meeting since the series, formerly the Golden League, was rebranded back in 2010.
Some of the other changes to the 2021 Diamond League calendar will see Rome’s Pietro Mennea Golden Gala meeting to be shifted to Florence after the confirmation on Wednesday that the Italian capital’s Stadio Olimpico will host matches in the football European Championship after the Italian government met UEFA’s demand that spectators be allowed to attend.
The meeting in Florence Italy will be moved from June 4 to June 10.The other change in the calendar will be in the Bislett Games which were meant to take place in Oslo in the month of June. The changes made has seen the dates change and the event pushed forward to July 1st to allow the organisers enough time to comply to the local coronavirus restrictions.
