Watford vs Chelsea was halted after 14 minutes due to a medical emergency in the stands.
Watford player Adam Masina had gone down injured at Vicarage Road and was set to be substituted.
But as he was getting treatment, it became clear that something serious was happening in the stands. Both Watford and Chelsea stars wanted an update on the fan's condition before they were prepared to return to the pitch to resume play.
It soon became clear that a fan in the Watford end had suffered a heart attack. Fortunately, reports suggest the fan in question is now stable and it seems Chelsea’s Marcos Alonso played an important role in helping the supporter.
Watford's official Twitter account tweeted: "The players have returned to the field in preparation of play resuming. Our thoughts are with the fan – who had a cardiac arrest but has now been stabilised – and all those affected. Thank you to the medical staff, players and fans for their quick response."
Images have emerged of the Chelsea left-back alerting medical staff to the stands and allowing him to receive treatment quickly.
Well played, Alonso.
We just pray that the supporter continues to recover and is okay.
Watford and Chelsea players returned from the pitch 25 minutes after leaving it and were allowed to warm up for five minutes before the match officially resumed.
Just under 10 minutes of the match had been played when the incident occurred, with the scores level. Watford defender Adam Masina was in fact down receiving treatment for an injury when the fan was suddenly taken ill. Hakim Ziyech stepped off the substitutes’ bench to earn Premier League leaders Chelsea a victory that head coach Thomas Tuchel admitted they “stole” in the strangest of circumstances at Vicarage Road. The match ended 2-1 in favor of the blues.
The Premier League fixture between Southampton and Leicester City on Wednesday night also had to be temporarily suspended due to a fan emergency. Southampton were leading Leicester City 2-1 at the half-time break when a fan was taken ill inside the St Mary's stadium and required emergency medical treatment.
The fan collapsed during the half-time break but did not suffer a cardiac arrest. Leicester City tweeted: "There will be a delay to kick-off for the second half due to a medical emergency in the stands."
While a message on the scoreboard read: "Second half delayed due to a medical incident. Thank you for your patience." The fan was treated inside St Mary's before being taken to the hospital.
Supporters had cleared out of the way to allow room for the medical staff to treat the stricken fan. The Hornets supporter was eventually stabilised and taken to the nearby Watford General Hospital. Leicester made it 2-2 just four minutes into the second period as Maddison claimed his third goal in as many games.
The creative midfielder collected the ball from Luke Thomas inside Southampton’s 18-yard box and then cut inside the sliding Tino Livramento before lashing past McCarthy at the near post.
