The president of the Polish soccer federation has accused national team manager Paulo Sousa of extremely irresponsible behaviour for seeking to leave his post after receiving an offer from a club.

Poland coach Paulo Sousa asked to end his contract by mutual consent after getting an offer from Brazilian top-flight club Flamengo but Polish football association president Cezary Kulesza has rejected the request.

Sousa's agent told Polish press agency PAP on Monday, December 27, that Sousa had not yet signed a contract with Flamengo.

Portuguese media reported that Sousa was due to start working in Rio de Janeiro in January, although his contract with Poland ends in March.

"Today I was informed by Paulo Sousa that he wanted to terminate the contract with Poland by mutual agreement due to an offer from another club.

"This is absolutely irresponsible behaviour, inconsistent with the previous statements of the coach. Therefore, I firmly refuse,” the tweet read.

Sousa was hired as coach in January 2021 but the team captained by Bayern Munich star Robert Lewandowski  has underperformed under his leadership, finishing last in its group at the European Championship in June.

Poland finished behind England in their qualifying group for next year’s World Cup in Qatar and will be in the playoffs in March.
