Just days after leaving Zambian giants ZESCO United, prolific Kenyan striker Jesse Were has been unveiled at another Zambian Super League club, Kansanshi Dynamos.
Were, who left upon expiry of his contract joins the Solwezi based side on a two year deal and is expected to link up with former ZESCO teammates Bruce Musakanya and Davy Daka.
Were won 4 Super League titles and 2 ABSA Cups at Zesco United as one of the best foreign acquisitions to have graced the local league in the last 2 decades. The seasoned striker has had a prolific career at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium scoring 108 goals making him Zesco United’s all time leading scorer. This season he has 2 goals in the league.
A naturally gifted striker with a razor-sharp eye for goals are some of the fine qualities that made the Kenyan striker arguably one of the best foreign acquisitions ZESCO United has made in the last decade.
ZESCO United Chief Executive Officer, Richard Kabwe Mulenga has described Were as one of the most dedicated servants of the beautiful game. “5-years ago, we brought Jesse Jackson Were to Ndola as part of our roadmap towards assembling a strong ZESCO United side. Today, we can proudly say that he has been a success story for this team."
“Were’s winning mentality has been a catalyst to the growth of this football club. No one will ever forget the goals he has scored for this team and the joy he brought not only to us but also to the ZESCO United fans." said Mulenga.
The 32-year-old tall, dark, lanky striker was a menace to defenders in both the domestic league and continental football.
Were is not new to goal scoring related history as in 2015 whilst at Tusker. The Kenyan talisman scored three hat tricks in three straight games against Chemelil, Sofapaka and Thika United from 12th July to 24th July and only missed out one hat-trick to level Nakayama Masashi in the Guinness Book of World Records whose four hat-tricks was recorded from 15th to 29th April in 1998.
Jesse joined Tusker at the beginning of the 2013 season but his start was on and off, playing a paltry of matches. But as soon as he got his rocking boat smoothly sailing, he didn’t stop.
Mabanga Boys as the Dynamos are popularly known are currently 12th on the log with 20 points. They have only scored 11 goals in the league.
