On Thursday, January 27, Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger launched an education foundation to support sports literacy in Sierra Leone.

Rudiger has roots in the West African nation as his mother was born in the country.

The German arrived in Sierra Leone on Monday, January 24,  after the Premier League proceeded on an international break.

Footage from the event showed a large crowd of people gathered at the launch, dancing and celebrating Rudiger's milestone.

I'm speechless. May I thank you from the bottom of my heart, for this overwhelming welcome, Sierra Leone. God bless you all,” he appreciated.

The 28 year old German defender, who was accompanied by his family, expressed his desire to help the young generation and the community.

"My family and I are honoured to be here. I don't see myself as a superstar as my parents always remind me to be humble that's why I'm here today.

"This foundation means a lot to me and I don't want it to be a one-man show. I want it to be something we all can look up to," he added.

While in the country the Chelsea defender watched the Sierra Leone Amputee Football Club play.

Chelsea's next fixture will be an FA match against Plymouth on February 5. The German is not expected to take part in the game as head coach Thomas Tuchel may reshuffle the team.

The Blues are third in the Premier League, ten points behind league leaders Manchester City.
