Former Manchester United and England International Wayne Rooney has been contacted by England’s football governing body, The FA.

This follows a comment he made, insinuating that at some point, he intentionally changed into boots with longer studs so that he could injure an opponent.

Rooney made the comments in an interview ahead of the launch of a documentary he is featured in.

He recounted a past Premier League match against Chelsea, one he admitted that his opponents were in way better shape than his then Manchester United side.

“I was so upset that Chelsea was better than us and going to win the league that I went looking for John Terry in the game,” Rooney said.

"The studs were legal but thinking if there's a challenge there I knew I'd want to go in for it properly, basically. I did actually,” Rooney added.

John Terry moved to Twitter to take a swipe at Rooney after the comments were published.

“Wayne Rooney is this when you left your stud in my foot?” Terry quipped, in a quoted retweet.

Rooney, who is currently the head coach of Championship side Derby County, could face sanctions from The FA following the comments.

In 2002, The FA imposed a £150,000 fine on former Manchester United and England player Roy Keane for admitting in his autobiography that he intentionally hurt then-Manchester City midfielder, Alf-Inge Haaland. The nasty injury ended Haaland’s career.
