Best Goalkeepers Harambee Stars Ever Had and Where They Are

Harambee Stars have had the pleasure of paying homage to some of the finest goalkeepers whose exploits remain memorable.

Some of these keepers remain servants of the game to date, serving at FKF Premier Lesgue clubs.

Teamkenya.co.ke takes a look at some of these keepers and where they are.

Francis Onyiso

Onyiso featured for the Harambee Stars between 1996 and 2011. He made 51 appearances for the team, and was part of the Harambee Stars squad at the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations.

Onyiso was snapped up by the Military, and has served as Ulinzi Stars’ goalkeeper trainer. He is currently on Military training.

Mahmoud Abbas

Fondly referred to as Kenya One owing to his prowess, Abbas is considered as one of Kenya’s greatest goalkeepers of all time. He also featured for AFC Leopards.

He was part of the Harambee Stars squad that won the CECAFA Senior Championships three times consecutively in 1981, 1982 and in 1983. He also won back to back Kenya Premier League titles between 1980 to 1982.

Abbas is a businessman in Mombasa.

Duncan Ochieng

Ochieng featured for the national team between 1997 and 2013, making 43 appearances. He also featured for local sides Mathare United, Mumias Sugar, Tusker and Sofapaka, as well as IK Sleipner in Sweden and Sông Lam Nghệ An in Vietnam.

He was part of Mathare United’s Kenya Premier League winning side in 2008 as well as Harambee Stars’ CECAFA Senior Championships winning team in 2013.

Dunco, as he is fondly referred to, now serves FKF Premier League defending champions Tusker as their goalkeepers’ trainer.

Jerry Onyango

Jerry’s notable achievement was winning the CECAFA Senior Championships with the Harambee Stars in 2013. He also featured prominently for Gor Mahia, at some point becoming their longest-serving player before he hang up his boots.

He has also served as the Harambee Stars goalkeeper trainer, as well as the keeper’s trainer for the Under-23, Under-20, and Under-17 national teams.

He most recently served Gor Mahia in the same capacity before he was snapped up by Kariobangi Sharks this month.

Boniface Oluoch

The calm and composed goalkeeper made 29 appearances for the Harambee Stars, and also featured for Gor Mahia and Tusker in the local league.

At the start of this year, he was appointed as the keeper trainer at Gor Mahia after serving the club as a player coach at the tail end of his career.
