Formula 1 Cancels the Russian Grand Prix

Formula 1, in a statement issued on Friday, February 25, announced that it had cancelled the Russian Grand Prix owing to the war between Russia and Ukraine. 

After a meeting held by Formula 1 stakeholders, it was resolved that it would be impossible to hold the Russian Grand Prix under the current circumstances. 

The Russian Grand Prix was due to take place on September 25, in Sochi, Russia.

“The FIA Formula 1 World Championship visits countries all over the world with a positive vision to unite people, bringing nations together. 

“We are watching the developments in Ukraine with sadness and shock and hope for a swift and peaceful resolution to the present situation. 

“On Thursday evening Formula 1, the FIA, and the teams discussed the position of our sport, and the conclusion is, including the view of all relevant stakeholders, that it is impossible to hold the Russian Grand Prix in the current circumstances,” the statement read. 

On Thursday, February 24 four-time champion Sebastian Vettel noted that he would not take part in the race if it would go ahead in Russia. 

"I should not go, I will not go. It is wrong to race in the country.   

"I am sorry for the innocent people who are being killed and a very strange and mad leadership," Vettel noted. 

Current world champion Max Verstappen also pointed out that the race should not take place in a country at war. 

"When a country is at war it is not right to race there," Verstappen noted.
