On March 1, 2022, NOC-K announced the ground breaking of the highly anticipated sports centre.

“The OlympAfrica Kenya Centre will be constructed under the auspices of OLYMPAFRICA Foundation, a project by Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) through the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOC-K) and in partnership with Nairobi County Government,” a statement by Olympic Kenya read.

Present at the event were President of the National Olympic Committee Kenya, Paul Tergat, and Nairobi County Governor, Anne Kananu.

“For us at the National Olympic Committee - Kenya (NOC-K), this marks a major milestone and accomplishment in a long-cherished desire to set up a facility for our young people to enjoy sport and undertake educational and social activities, through sport,” Paul Tergat noted.

The Ksh39.8 billion project will also have spectator stands, hostels and a health centre.

The multi-purpose sports centre will be a hub for young people where they will try to venture into different sports disciplines as they seek to grow talent.

According to the National Olympic Committee, the main goal of building the centre is to provide easily accessible sports facilities for disadvantaged youth.

This will be the first of its kind in Kenya. In Africa there are similar centres in 37 countries that are fully operational.
