From Military to the Pitch: The Untold Story of Former Ulinzi Stars Striker

It's always so unlikely for the people in the military to quit and major in sports. For Stephen Waruru, he did the unexpected in 2017 when he hung the boots to concentrate on football.

The Former Ulinzi Stars striker says he quit the military in order to fully focus on his business and football career. 

Waruru shocked most of his colleagues when left the Kenya Defense Forces(KDF) outfit Ulinzi FC, a top-tier league side in 2017 and joined Sofapaka where he spent two seasons before leaving for KCB FC.

Speaking exclusively to Teamkenya.co.ke the former Sofapaka and Ulinzi star pointman says he doesn't regret quitting the army and concentrating on sports and business.

“It was a personal decision, I wanted to concentrate on my football career and develop my business, and I have never regretted making that decision.” He said

“I will always be grateful to the military for the chance they gave me; the training they took me through and how they supported me in my football career – is always the best I have ever had” the striker stated

Waruru added, “I have been running my plumbing business for the last five years, I also have a hardware store in Thika that we have partnered with my friends  so far we are enjoying the business growth and we hope to expand it more and more.”

The striker advised Kenyan footballers to always have side hustles and learn new skills. “Have some extra hustle because one day the football career will end and it’s always good to have something that will support your life thereafter,” he concluded.
