A Kenyan Village Club Exporting Football Talents

It is a Kenyan women's professional team playing in the Kenyan Premier League Vihiga Queens FC was founded in 2014 in Mbale, Vihiga County, in Western Kenya.

The team hit international headlines after impressing during the women's AWCON in Cairo in 2021. What makes the team notable is the fact that it has been sending talents to play for not only Europe but the rest of the world.

Teamkenya.co.ke spoke to Boniface Nyamunyamu, the head coach of the team to find out what they are doing differently that is making them stand out of the pack.

The gaffer insisted that they are not doing anything different from other women's teams in Kenya and that it's always the individual player's initiative to work hard and push themselves out of their comfort zones.

“We are not doing anything different, we focus on team performance, we train hard and our players have always had the zeal to push themselves. I think with their hard work, it has always paid them off,” Nyamunyamu noted.

“We have always had instances where our players have produced individual brilliance in matches. Am always proud whenever I see our local-born players get recognition and sign for international teams. It's always a motivation for the rest of the team” He added

Vihiga Queens has sent over six players playing professional football abroad, the latest being a 19-year-old Jentrix Shikangwa who signed for the Turkish side  Fatih Karagümrük.

Vihiga Queens has won the Premier League title on three consecutive occasions from 2017 to 2019.
