Drama at Everton, Newcastle Match as Fan Ties Self on Goalpost

There was drama at Goodison Park after a fan chained himself on one of the goalposts before the match between Everton and Newcastle started.

The unusual event temporarily brought to a halt the match which was played on Thursday, Match 17 night.

The match was stopped in the early stages of the second half after the fan rushed into the pitch and tied himself on a goalpost.

The process of freeing him proved quite difficult forcing the security detail to use a large bolt cutter to cut the material used by the fan to tie himself.

The fan was donning a t-shirt written "JUST STO OIL".

A second man, who appeared to confront the protester, was also arrested on suspicion of assault and of pitch encroachment. 

On Wednesday, March 16, a similar incident happened during the match between Arsenal and Liverpool after a fan wearing a similar t-shirt attempted to attach himself to one of the goalposts.

Everton, who are battling not to exit the Premier League, emerged victorious despite being less one player after Brazilian midfielder Allan Marques Loureiro was shown a red card.

Nigerian international, Alex Iwobi, was Everton’s hero as he scored the only goal in the 99th minute. According to the Merseyside Police, both individuals are being investigated.

"The suspect, a 21-year-old man, has been arrested on suspicion of pitch encroachment and he is now in police custody. The game resumed and has now concluded. 

"A second man, 39 years, was arrested on suspicion of assault and of pitch encroachment, and is also in police custody," the police stated.
