Kenyan Athletes have no doubt made their mark, having broken world records time and again in major competitions throughout history.

While a number of these legends have already retired, others are still flying the country's flag and making every Kenyan proud.

TeamKenya.co.ke looks at some of the most successful sports personalities that have put Kenya on the world map.

Eliud Kipchoge 

Kipchoge's name has gone into the books of history as the fastest marathon runner in history. He also holds the record of the athlete that has collected the most gold medals and records under his belt. 

 Kipchoge won his first individual world championship title in 2003 at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships. He set a world junior record in 5,000 meters.

Paul Tergat

Tergat won five straight IAAF World Cross Country Championships titles from 1995, breaking the standing record at the start of his career. He won silver during the 1996 Atlanta and 2000 Sidney Olympics.

In early 2021, the now-retired Olympic athlete was re-appointed to the International Olympic Committee Disciplinary Commission. Tergat was first elected as a member of the international body in 2013 during the Olympic Games in Argentina for an 8-year term.

David Lekuta Rudisha

He is the fastest man on earth when it comes to the 800m race. Rudisha earned his reputation after he set the world record of 1:40:91 at the London Olympics in 2012.

Rudisha suffered an ankle injury in 2020 and a minor back and knee injury a year before that, locking him out of the Olympics that year.

Ezekiel Kemboi

Kemboi is one of only four men that won the Olympic and World Championships at Monaco in 3000m steeplechase with 7:55.76 in 2011.

He is the only athlete to have won four world championships in the steeplechase.

Samuel Wanjiru

He was the first Kenyan to win an Olympic Marathon gold at the 2008 Olympics games in Beijing, China at the age of 22 years.

After his death in 2011, a multi-million emergency unit at the Nyahururu County Referral Hospital was built in his honour. He was a two-time Chicago Marathon winner
