On Tuesday, April 12, the Guinness World Records announced that it was set to confirm the Champions League as the greatest sports competition in history.

This was after two second-leg semi-final matches were played with Bayern being eliminated by Villareal and Chelsea suffering at the hands of Real Madrid.

The news, however, attracted mixed reactions from various stakeholders with some opposing the move.

“So, what happened to the World Cup? You guys should reason this,” one fan commented.

“UCL does not in any way come close to World Cup games. During the World Cup tournament, people leave their countries, continents to the World Cup hosting nation just to have the feeling of the atmosphere. The reason Maradona is remembered today is not because of his skills but Mexico 86,” another comment read.

“That’s an insult to the World Cup, a competition for national teams which takes four years and a series of qualifiers to get there. Every footballer's dream. Every national team's fans look forward to their team playing in the World Cup,” a twitter comment read.

“UCL showcases the best teams with the best players providing amazing football for 90+ minutes. The World Cup is literally six countries vs the rest because those 6 countries have better economies to provide better players,” a fan commented.

“You can’t compare UCL to World Cup unless if we want to be biased here, we all know we love UCL more than World Cup. Some will not even watch World Cup,” another comment read.

The UEFA Champions League is an annual club football competition contested by top-division European clubs.

The tournament has 32 teams that compete in five rounds as they seek to lift the highly coveted trophy with one being crowned the best club in European football.

Only 21 football clubs have had the privilege of lifting the Champions League trophy with Real Madrid recording the highest wins with 13 trophies.
