A 30-year-old English fan was sentenced to 24 weeks in jail after pleading guilty to assault.

The fan was accused of occasioning actual bodily harm to Sheffield United captain, Billy Sharp, during Tuesday's Championship play-off semi-final against Nottingham Forest.

A CCTV camera captured him hitting and knocking down Sharp after Sheffield United overturned a two-goal deficit to level the tie at 3 - 3 on aggregate.

The game proceeded to extra-time and penalties, but Sheffield lost in the shootout.

While appearing before a Nottingham Magistrates Court, the Forest season ticket holder who resides in Derbyshire was charged with assault and bodily harm.

The prosecutor told the court that the accused rammed into Sheffield United captain, Billy Sharp, who required four stitches to treat a wound to his lip.

"Cases such as this will hopefully serve as a deterrent to anyone thinking of getting involved in violent disorder at football matches.

“Incidents are treated extremely seriously by the force and football clubs and people involved will be held to account,” Assistant Chief Constable, Rob Griffin, of Nottinghamshire police stated.

Police arrested the fan on Wednesday, a day after the incident.
