Former Nairobi Governor Mike  Sonko has stepped up to help boxing legend Conjestina Achieng who has been in a sickly state. A video shared by the former governor showed the retired boxer arriving at Mombasa Women's Hospital in Mike Sonko’s Range Rover for rehabilitation treatment.

Sonko had shared a video of himself and Conjestina riding in a Range Rover while interrogating Conjestina. She was unable to correctly answer his questions, which would sound easy to others.

The former Nairobi Governor and now Mombasa Gubernatorial aspirant, however, declined to disclose the reason behind the boxer's condition.

Videos and photos of the boxing star had sparked an uproar with Kenyans infuriated at the manner in which the government had abandoned her.

The former World Boxing Council, WBC, middleweight Champion was seen in a sad state in her rural home in Siaya County.

On Saturday, July 2, Sonko announced his intention to help Conjestina. The Mombasa gubernatorial hopeful condemned leaders for concentrating on politics while a legend was languishing in poverty and poor health.

“I am truly saddened by this WhatsApp message from Conjestina’s son. Our leaders are busy campaigning while one of our heroes who once made this country proud is currently languishing in poverty,” read a statement on Sonko’s social media account.

The screenshots shared by Sonko, allegedly from Conjestina’s son, showed him pleading for help adding that his mother was at her ‘worst’.

Lately, there was a  photo of her that has been trending on social media that is so disturbing.

"Conje is at her worst now. I request if you can give any kind of support. We wish to take her back to rehab again so she can regain her shape back,” read the WhatsApp screenshots.

The 44-year-old has been suffering from mental health complications for the better part of her retirement. Her father appealed to well-wishers in 2010  to help him cater for Achieng’s treatment.

Sonko noted that Conjestina was now in safe hands and would commence a rehabilitation process at the health facility.
