Omanyala and Team Kenya Set New National Record in 4x100M Relay

Ferdinand Omanyala led Team Kenya into the 4x100m relay final at the Commonwealth Games in a new national record time. 

Omanyala who picked up the baton as the fourth athlete in the final 100m, finished second behind Nigeria. 

Team Kenya’s Samwel Imeta started the race before passing down to Mike Mokamba and then Dan Kiviasi at third. Omanyala, Africa's fastest man and Commonwealth Games 100-metre winner wrapped the race. 

The Kenyan team clocked 38.92 seconds behind Nigeria who had 38.85 with Ghana finishing third in 39.05 to automatically qualify for the finals.

In the same heat, Gambia who finished fourth progressed as a non-automatic qualifier. 

The finals are scheduled for Sunday, August 6. Kenya hopes to add its medal tally at the club games. 

The group led by Omanyala will hope to replicate their African Championships triumph where they won Kenya's first ever 4x100m gold for Kenya. 

Kenya has a tally of 13 medals having collected three gold, four silver and six bronze medals in the Commonwealth Games.  

This year's tourney held in Birmingham began on Friday, July 29 and will endon Monday, August 6.
