“There is a saying that “all good things must come to an end", and for my professional football career, that day is today,” part of his statement read.

In his 20 years career as a professional footballer, Mikel played for top clubs like Chelsea, Middlesbrough and Stoke among others.

At Chelsea, he aided the Blues to lift the 2012 Champions League title and two Premier League titles in the 2009/10 and 2014/15 seasons.

The 35-year-old added that he was satisfied with what he has achieved so far in his career.

“All of this would not have been possible without the unwavering support of my family, managers, clubs, coaches, teammates and most importantly my ever-loyal fans. You supported me through my highs and lows, even on days when I did not live up to your expectations. I say a big thank you,” Mikel added.

The former Nigerian international also urged those who have been inspired by his career to never quit.

“This is not goodbye, it's the start of another journey, another chapter of my life. I look forward to what the future holds and I hope you will walk with me. Thank you,” Mikel’s statement read.
