Sadio Mane produced a thrilling performance on Tuesday Night, September 4, to help Bayern Munich break the UEFA Champions League group stage record.

The Senegalese international scored and provided an assist in Bayern’s 5-0 thrashing of minnows Viktoria Plzen.

His eye-catching performance helped Bayern to break the Champions League group stage record that was previously held by defending champions Real Madrid.

Bayern’s win over Viktoria Plzen meant that they won 31 games in a row, one more than the record set by Real Madrid between 2012 and 2017.

Real Madrid’s group stage winning streak ended in the hands of Tottenham Hotspurs in November 2017, in a game in which Dele Ali scored a brace.

Mane who bagged the man of the match award hit the back of the net in the 21st minute to put the multiple Bundesliga winners 3-0 up.

Arsenal academy product Serge Gnabry and former Manchester City winger Leroy Sane had already put Bayern in control earlier in the first half.

Mane who played an instrumental role in Liverpool's 2019 Champions League triumph also assisted his West African compatriot Eric Choupo-Moting fourteen minutes into the start of the second half.

Other clubs that have previously enjoyed the longest group stage unbeaten run in the competition include Barcelona (25 matches) and Manchester City (18 matches).

Bayern Munich’s next Champions League match will be against a Barcelona side who are on the verge of exciting the tournament at the group stage level for the second time in a row.

The crunch match will be staged at Nou Camp Stadium on October 26, at 2200hrs East African Time.
