After completing his Kenya Certificate of Primary Education, life became exceedingly difficult for Franklin Mwenda after his single parent Beatrice Mwendwa was unable to cater to his needs.

With the challenges at home, Mwenda decided to leave for greener pastures in Nairobi.

While in Nairobi, around 2006 his life turned topsy-turvy and he was forced to hustle in the streets of Nairobi.

Mwendwa eventually slept in the streets becoming a street boy where together with other children they used magnets to collect metals which they sold to get food and gum.

Mwenda slept between Muthurwa Market and the Central Business District (CBD) together with other street children.

They faced various challenges such as hard labour with no pay, sleeping in the rain and harassment from the city council during their time on the streets.

In 2009, Mwenda and his friends came across Alex Mwangi who was working at City Stadium. Mwangi who was playing paper football at a roundabout near the stadium asked them if they would want to play football.

Mwangi approached the then City Stadium manager Obiero and asked if he would provide the boys with a field outside the stadium where they would be training.

Alex Mwangi went on to appoint one coach only known as Reggae, to train the boys. He also negotiated with the city council to open a public toilet at the City Stadium and a shop too.

He also bought for the boys a trolley for selling boiled eggs and smokies. The team formed was named Stadium Homeless Youth (SHY).

As days went on Alex approached the boys and asked if they would want to go to school. Mwenda was among those who decided to join Matuu High School on a full scholarship.

After finishing high school, Mwenda joined Kenya Methodist University (KeMU) FC which was playing in the FKF National Division One.

He later played for KeMU FC in the FKF National Super League 2015 and was also admitted as a student to KeMU to study Hospitality and Tourism Management while nurturing his football talent.
