Ukraine Joins Bid to Host World Cup

Ukraine on Wednesday, October 5, joined Spain and Portugal in their joint bid to host the 2030 World Cup.

The inclusion of the war-torn nation was announced during a joint address of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) and the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) on Wednesday, October 5. 

Luis Rubiales, the President of the RFEF speaking at the Swiss headquarters of UEFA noted that he was convinced that all of Spanish society would be proud of the important strides they have made as a federation.

"Each one of us represents our countries separately, but together we represent the transformative power that football has in society,” Luis Rubiales the President of the RFEF stated. 

According to RFEF the proposal to include Ukraine in the bid has the unconditional support of UEFA. 

It was also noted that the candidacy strengthens ties with Europe by generating hope and providing reconstruction tools to the Ukrainian people. 

Despite the inclusion of Ukrainian, both the Spanish and Portugal federations noted that they retain their venues 11 (Spain) and three (Portugal). 

The 2030 World Cup has seen nations send joint bids: Egypt-Greece-Saudi Arabia, Uruguay-Argentina-Paraguay-Chile,️ Morocco-Tunisia-Algeria and Israel-UAE-Bahrain. 

The final decision on which nation will host the 2030 World Cup will be done at a FIFA Congress in 2024, where the 211 member associations will vote.
