Retired Egyptian goalkeeper Essam El Hadary left a mark at his final World Cup appearance when he became the oldest player to feature at the quadrennial event.

The legendary goalkeeper, aged 45 then at the FIFA World Cup Russia 2018, smashed the record set by Colombian Faryd Mondragon in 2014.

He featured in the pharaohs’ third group match against Saudi Arabia, where he also became the first African to save a penalty at the World Cup.

El Hadary retired from international football in August 2018 after his team was bundled out of the tournament.

The ex-goalkeeper represented Egypt on 159 occasions after making his debut in 1996. With the Pharaos, he has lifted four African Cup of Nations titles.

El Hadary is currently the goalkeeping coach for Egypt's U23 national team.

The Pharaohs failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup after losing to African Champions Senegal.
