Athletics Kenya will conduct the Tokyo Olympics trials in Nairobi and not Eldoret as earlier planned. The trials are expected to take place at the Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani from June 17-19.
According to a statement from Athletics Kenya, the trials will also double up as a test event for systems and infrastructure which will be used for the World Athletics Under-20 Championships set to take place in August.
Athletics Kenya were forced to dismiss their initial plan since the Kip Keino Stadium in Eldoret is currently under construction and will not be ready to host the trials like it did back in 2016 for the Rio Olympic games.
Athletics Kenya through a statement revealed that the event will strictly remain an invite-only event for the athletes who have thus far attained the qualifying mark for the Olympics in their respective races and fully met the anti-doping requirements set by the Anti Doping Agency of Kenya (ADAK).
The board has also urged athletes who are targeting qualification mark through international competitions to liaise with them and avoid competing in unsanctioned races.
The event will be expected to host many athletes seeking for a spot in the global showpiece that will be held in Tokyo in July as it will provide a platform and room for exposure which will in turn aid them to dive deep in their athletic career.
