Kenyan footballer, Philip Mayaka, has announced plans to start a foundation to help needy students in Western Kenya access scholarships.
Mayaka, who plays for United States-based side Colorado Rapids, visited St. Peters Mumias High School in November 2022 to discuss the plan with the institution's principal Cosmas Nabungolo.
According to the footballer, the foundation will focus on both education and developing sporting talents.

“Together with my dad, I was privileged to meet with St. Peter’s Mumias principal Mr Nabungolo to talk about how we can nurture talents and help students achieve their goals.
“We are in discussion to launch a foundation that will help students get scholarships,” read part of his statement.
Nabungolo used to teach Mayaka at the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) multiple national football champions St. Anthony’s Kitale.
The versatile player received his first national team (Harambee Stars) call-up in 2021.
He was included in the 34-member provisional squad that was expected to play Mali in a 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier match.
Mayaka was scouted by Florida-based Montverde Academy while playing football in Nairobi.
The 21-year-old had the option to play professional football in Norway, but he chose to move to the United States since the latter offered him an opportunity of completing his education.
Mayaka is one of the stars expected to fill the void that was left by former Tottenham Hotspur and Celtic midfielder Victor Mugubi Wanyama.
Although he is primarily used as a defending midfielder, the footballer can also play as a winger.
